Brief definition: This method consists in replacing the text spoken orally in the original version of the film by its translation into another language, spoken by another actor. We then respect as much as possible the movements of the lips of the actors in the image (lip synchronization).

The stages of dubbing:

1. Detection

We transcribe the original text so that we can read it at the same time as we watch the film. The text is written on a “mother tape”. The detector, a technician assigned to this task, stretches the text following the verbal flow of the actors on the screen, and indicates by conventional signs the movements of the lips, the laughter, the breaths, the changes of plans, etc.

2. Adaptation

The adapter is a translator that relies on the motherboard to translate the text. He seeks to synchronize his translation with the original text according to the speed of the verbal flow and the movement of the actors’ lips on the screen.

For translator Sylvestre Meininger , “ in dubbing, the translator can take a lot more liberties[than in subtitling]insofar as the original disappears. However, it is just as essential to stick to the rhythm of the writing, the directing and the editing, as well as the gestures and the acting of the actors. And, of course, in the sense! It’s a job that also requires a little more time, because as soon as a character moves his lips, text has to be introduced. This freedom is however subject, in fact, to the imperative of synchronism.  “

3 . Calligraphy

The calligrapher simplifies the text and its signs on a transparent tape (known as the “rythmo tape”) which, during recording, will be projected under the film.

4 . The record

In an auditorium meet the sound engineer in charge of the recording, the artistic director and the actors. Facing the film on the screen, the latter read their text, which scrolls under the image on the rhythm tape established by the calligrapher, synchronizing it as much as possible to the movement of the characters’ lips.

5 . Mixing

In the International Version (VI) of the film, the original voices are replaced by those of the actor-dubbers.
